Can food cause an irregular heartbeat?

Cardiac arrhythmia is also known as an irregular heartbeat, whether your heart beats too fast or too slow. This is caused when electrical impulses to the heart don’t work properly.

Sometimes you may not even notice when this occurs. Other times you may feel a fluttering in the chest, you may feel faint or dizzy or you may experience chest pains.

If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your cardiologist.

If you have been diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia there are certain foods you should avoid. Alcohol can trigger an irregular heartbeat. So, it’s best to avoid beer, wine and liquor. Caffeine is another culprit which includes coffee, caffeinated teas and soft drinks.

If you decide to start a diet that is a liquid diet or a high protein diet, only do so under the care of your doctor. These types of fad diets can affect the concentrations of electrolytes in your bloodstream, which in turn may cause cardiac arrhythmia.

Lastly, when taking cold or allergy medicine watch for the ingredient ephedra or ma huang. This has been known to cause heart attacks, strokes and even death.
